Bad news at 92: Barry Newman, Star of “Vanishing Point” and “The Limey”

The late Newman, who d.i.e.d on May 11, “was a rock for so many people,” according to his wife Angela.

According to multiple accounts, Barry Newman, best known for his role in the classic action film The Vanishing Point, d.i.e.d on May 11 in a hospital in New York City.

The Emmy-nominated star was 92 years old. There is no further information available about his demise.

Angela, Newman’s wife who is still alive, confirmed that her husband had died. According to Deadline, his friends also confirmed the news on social media.

Angela described Newman as “a rock for so many people, whose spirits he lifted and allowed to be free” in a tribute to THR. “He had an amazing, funny sense of humor that brightened everything and everyone, and he was truly a light for so many.”

The theater, film, and television actor was raised in Boston and is best known for his starring role in the 1974 judicial drama Petrocelli. He decided to become an actor after meeting Lee Strasberg while attending Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. Following graduating, he took acting classes in New York City.

Newman went on to star in films like Daylight with Sylvester Stallone in 1996, and Bowfinger with Steve Martin in 1999, and The Limey with the late Peter Fonda in the same year.

According to various websites, Newman was diagnosed with vocal cord can:cer in 2009, which limited his performing prospects.

Finding Hannah, a 2022 film made in 2019, was his most recent project.

In the same year, Newman highlighted how one of Steven Spielberg’s favorite films, 1971’s Vanishing Point, helped him gain early recognition. The cult film did not instantly gain popularity in the United States, but when it was released in London, “people lined up around the block to see it,” according to Newman, as reported by THR.

“In America, I was just a guy picking up his bags at the airport, whereas, in England, I was a hero!”
