My 18-year-old daughter had fallen in love with a 60-year-old man and was determined to marry him, despite my concerns. She insisted it was true love, but I soon uncovered a disturbing truth about him.
One peaceful afternoon, I was sorting through the mail when Serena, my daughter, came home from work. As usual, her presence filled the house with energy, but today something felt different.
“Dad, I’ve met someone,” she announced, her face glowing. “His name’s Edison, and we’re getting married. He’s sixty.”
Sixty. The word echoed in my mind. My daughter, barely an adult, was planning to marry someone almost three times her age. “Sixty, Serena? This doesn’t make sense.”
“Age doesn’t matter, Dad,” she said firmly. “Edison understands me like no one else. He loves me.”
I wasn’t convinced, but I agreed to meet Edison, hoping to see what she saw in him.
The next evening, we met at his place. While Serena talked with him inside, I stepped onto the balcony for air. That’s when I overheard something chilling.
“Annie, don’t worry. I’m just having some fun to pay off my debts,” Edison said smoothly.
“You’re using that girl for money, Edison. It’s wrong,” the woman replied.
My heart sank. Edison was deceiving my daughter, using her as part of a twisted plan. Furious, I confronted Serena, but she refused to believe me.
“You don’t understand!” she cried. “You were never there for me after Mom passed. Edison is the only one who’s been there.”
Her words cut deep, but I knew I had to act. I hired a private investigator, who quickly uncovered Edison’s dark history—failed businesses, gambling issues, and debts. Armed with this knowledge, I confronted him at a casino, winning a poker game to make a point. I warned him to stay away from Serena, but I had a feeling he wouldn’t stop.
Then, I heard Serena was planning an engagement party. Desperate, I attended, determined to stop the wedding. With the help of Annie, Edison’s sister, we exposed his lies. During the ceremony, several women stood up, revealing how Edison had conned them. Serena was devastated, throwing her ring aside and fleeing from the church.
Soon after, Edison was arrested for fraud. Serena came to me, full of regret. “Dad, I’m sorry. I should’ve listened to you.”
I hugged her, offering her a plane ticket to Boston, where she had once dreamed of studying fashion design. “It’s time for a fresh start.”
She smiled, grateful. “Thank you, Dad. I love you.”
This experience taught me a powerful lesson: always be present in your children’s lives. If I had been there for Serena earlier, she might have avoided Edison. But now, we have a second chance, and I won’t let her down again.
