Actor Gary Sinise and his family are heartbroken after the sad news of his son, McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, who died at just 33 years old.
Gary, who is 68 years old, posted some really sad news about Mac’s passing on the Gary Sinise Foundation’s website and his Instagram. He shared that Mac fought hard against cancer but unfortunately lost on January 5.
Gary shared an emotional message, revealing that Mac has been fighting a rare type of cancer known as Chordoma since August 8, 2018. This heartbreaking news came only a few months after Gary’s wife, Moira Harris, was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer.
Moira was able to get treatment and went into remission, but Mac’s health got worse as time went on, slowly taking away his strength and ability to move.
Even though he had health problems, Mac didn’t give up and kept on following his love for music. He became an assistant manager of education and outreach at the Gary Sinise Foundation and played the drums with his dad in the Lt. Dan Band, showing off his musical skills.
Mac loved music and graduated from the University of Southern California, where he studied songwriting and composition. Even though he had to go through five spine surgeries from 2018 to 2020 and was paralyzed from the chest down, he never let that stop his creativity. Right before he passed away, he finished working on an album called “Resurrection & Revival.”
Gary talked about the deep sadness of losing a child, saying: “Just like any family going through this kind of loss, we are devastated and trying to cope as best as we can. As parents, it’s really tough to lose a child. My thoughts are with everyone who has gone through a similar loss, and with anyone who has lost a loved one. We’ve all felt it in some way. Throughout the years, I’ve met many families of our fallen heroes. It’s really sad, and it’s just really tough.”
He kept saying, “Our family fought against cancer for 5 ½ years, and it got harder and harder as time passed. We miss him a lot, but we find comfort in knowing that Mac is not suffering anymore. We are amazed by how he handled it all. He fought bravely against a cancer that can’t be cured, but he never gave up.”
Mac’s family keeps his memory alive by including his parents, sisters, nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Gary is dedicated to honoring Mac’s legacy by releasing his album, “Mac Sinise: Resurrection and Revival,” on vinyl.
Even though Gary is going through such a deep loss, his words show just how much he loves and admires his son. The memory of his son will keep inspiring and lifting up everyone who knew him.
We are sending out our thoughts to the Sinise family at this difficult time.
